Vijay Mallya - A Lifestory
From "King Of Good Times" To Facing Hard Times

Vijay Mallya, an Indian businessman and former politician, is a figure known for his flamboyant lifestyle and involvement in highprofile business ventures. Born on December 18, 1955, in Kolkata, India, he inherited his father Vittal Mallya's business empire, which included the United Breweries Group. Under his leadership, the group expanded significantly, becoming a major player in the Indian alcoholic beverage industry, most notably with its Kingfisher beer brand. Mallya diversified his business interests beyond alcohol, venturing into aviation with the launch of Kingfisher Airlines in 2005.
Kingfisher Airlines, initially lauded for its premium service and modern fleet, faced financial difficulties due to a combination of factors, including rising fuel prices and intense competition. The airline eventually accumulated substantial debts and ceased operations in 2012. The collapse of Kingfisher Airlines triggered a series of legal and financial troubles for Mallya. He faced allegations of financial irregularities and defaulting on loans owed to various Indian banks.
In 2016, Mallya left India amidst mounting pressure from creditors and authorities. He has since resided in the United Kingdom, where he has been engaged in a protracted legal battle against extradition to India to face charges related to financial crimes. The Indian government has been actively pursuing his extradition to recover the outstanding debts owed by Kingfisher Airlines. Mallya's case has become a prominent example of corporate debt and the challenges of recovering funds from individuals who have left the country. Despite the legal battles, he maintains that he is willing to repay the principal amount of the loans, although disputes remain over the total amount owed and the terms of repayment.
