Uday Kotak is a prominent Indian banker, financier, and the founder and director of Kotak Mahindra Bank. Born in Mumbai, he hails from a Gujarati family with a background in the cotton trading business. Kotak demonstrated an early aptitude for finance, graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Commerce and an MBA from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai. Instead of joining his family business, he ventured into financial services, starting a bill discounting business in 1985 with a small loan. This marked the genesis of what would become the Kotak Mahindra Group.
Over the years, Kotak strategically expanded his business, diversifying into various financial sectors including investment banking, stockbroking, car finance, life insurance, and mutual funds. A pivotal moment arrived in 2003 when Kotak Mahindra Finance Ltd. received a banking license from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), transforming it into Kotak Mahindra Bank. This made it the first nonbanking finance company in India to achieve this feat. Under his leadership, the bank has grown into one of India's leading private sector banks, known for its conservative lending practices and focus on technology.
