Subhash Ghai is a renowned Indian filmmaker, producer, and screenwriter, best known for his impactful contributions to Hindi cinema. After studying at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, he began his career as an assistant director and screenwriter before making his directorial debut with Kalicharan (1976). Ghai rose to prominence in the 1980s and 1990s with hits like Karz (1980), Hero (1983), Ram Lakhan (1989), Karma (1986), and Saudagar (1991), with Hero launching Jackie Shroff’s career. He also worked with A.R. Rahman on the successful musical Taal (1999). Apart from filmmaking, Ghai founded Whistling Woods International in 2006 to nurture future talent. His films often explore themes of revenge, tradition, and modernity, with his legacy cemented through the success of Pardes (1997) and numerous awards, including the Padma Shri in 2019. His influence in the industry continues through his mentorship and production company, Mukta Arts.
