Shivaram Karanth was a towering figure in Kannada literature and a polymath whose interests and contributions spanned a remarkable range of fields. Born in Kota, a village in Karnataka, in 1902, Karanth was a prolific writer, social activist, environmentalist, and artist. He left formal education early to participate in India's independence movement, which instilled in him a lifelong commitment to social justice and reform. His literary works encompassed novels, plays, children's literature, and encyclopedias, reflecting his insatiable curiosity and deep understanding of human nature and society.
Karanth's novels, such as "Chomana Dudi" and "Bettada Jeeva," are celebrated for their realistic portrayals of rural life, social inequalities, and the struggles of marginalized communities. He fearlessly explored complex themes, challenging societal norms and advocating for the rights of the oppressed. Beyond literature, Karanth was a pioneer in Yakshagana, a traditional form of theatre in Karnataka.
