Prakash Amte - A Lifestory
Lifelong Dedication: Selfless Service, Uplifting Tribal Communities, A True Humanitarian

Prakash Amte is a highly respected and admired Indian social worker renowned for his decadeslong dedication to serving marginalized communities, particularly the Madia Gond tribe in the remote Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra. Born into a family deeply rooted in social activism, as the son of the legendary Baba Amte, Prakash inherited a strong sense of empathy and a commitment to uplifting the underprivileged. He and his wife, Mandakini Amte, a physician, chose to dedicate their lives to providing medical care, education, and other essential services to the Madia Gond people, who historically faced extreme poverty, limited access to healthcare, and social exclusion.
After completing his medical studies, Dr. Prakash Amte, along with his wife, established the Lok Biradari Prakalp in Hemalkasa, a remote village in Gadchiroli. This project began with a humble dispensary under a tree and gradually expanded to encompass a fullfledged hospital, a school, and an animal orphanage. The hospital provides muchneeded medical care to the local population, often treating diseases and conditions that would otherwise go unaddressed. The school offers education to children from the Madia Gond community, empowering them with knowledge and skills to improve their lives and break the cycle of poverty. The animal orphanage, a unique aspect of the project, serves as a sanctuary for injured or orphaned wild animals, reflecting the Amtes' deep respect for nature and their commitment to conservation.
Prakash Amte's unwavering commitment and selfless service have earned him numerous accolades, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership. His life story is a testament to the power of compassion and the transformative impact that individuals can have on the lives of others. He continues to inspire countless people to dedicate themselves to social causes and to work towards a more just and equitable society. His work demonstrates the profound difference that can be made by providing healthcare, education, and a sense of dignity to those who are often overlooked and marginalized.
