Jagdeep Dhankhar is a prominent Indian politician currently serving as the 14th VicePresident of India. His journey in public service is marked by diverse roles, spanning law, governance, and legislative leadership. Born in a small village in Rajasthan, Dhankhar pursued his education in law and established a successful legal career before entering politics. He was enrolled as an Advocate in 1979 with Bar Council of Rajasthan. He was designated as a Senior Advocate by the High Court of Judicature for Rajasthan in 1990.
Dhankhar's political career began in the late 1980s when he was elected to the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian Parliament, representing the Janata Dal party. He subsequently served as a Member of Parliament, gaining experience in nationallevel policymaking and legislative processes. His political affiliations evolved over time, and he later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Prior to assuming the VicePresidency, Dhankhar served as the Governor of West Bengal. During his tenure as Governor, he was known for his proactive approach and his focus on issues related to governance, law and order, and the welfare of the state's citizens. Elected as the VicePresident of India in 2022, Jagdeep Dhankhar also serves as the exofficio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament. In this role, he presides over the proceedings of the Rajya Sabha, ensuring the smooth conduct of parliamentary business and upholding the decorum of the House.
