Henry Louis Vivian Derozio was a prominent figure in the intellectual and social history of 19thcentury India, particularly in Bengal. Born in Calcutta in 1809, he displayed exceptional intellectual capabilities from a young age. His education at the David Hare's School provided him with a foundation in Western thought and philosophy, shaping his critical and rational outlook. Derozio began his career as a teacher at Hindu College (now Presidency University) at the remarkably young age of 17. There, he quickly gained popularity among his students, inspiring them with his passionate advocacy for free thought, skepticism, and rational inquiry. He encouraged them to question traditional beliefs and social norms, fostering a spirit of intellectual rebellion that became known as the "Young Bengal" movement.

Derozio's teachings extended beyond the classroom, as he established academic and debating societies where students could engage in open discussions on a range of topics, including philosophy, literature, and social reform. He also contributed extensively to various journals and newspapers, using his writing to advocate for social justice, women's rights, and the abolition of oppressive customs. His progressive ideas, however, brought him into conflict with the conservative elements of Hindu society and the college authorities. Accusations of promoting atheism and undermining traditional values led to his dismissal from Hindu College in 1831. Despite this setback, Derozio continued to write and engage in public discourse, remaining a powerful voice for social and intellectual change. Sadly, his life was cut short by cholera later that year, at the age of 22. Although his career was brief, Derozio's impact on the intellectual landscape of Bengal was profound, leaving behind a legacy of critical thinking, social reform, and a lasting influence on the development of modern India.
