Chhotu Ram - A Lifestory

Chhotu Ram, a prominent figure in preindependence India, was a champion of farmers' rights and a significant voice in the sociopolitical landscape of Punjab. Born in 1881 in a small village in presentday Haryana, he rose from humble beginnings to become a powerful advocate for the agrarian community. His early life experiences instilled in him a deep understanding of the hardships faced by farmers, particularly those burdened by debt and exploitation. He pursued his education diligently, eventually earning a law degree, which he then used as a tool to fight for justice on behalf of the peasantry.

Chhotu Ram's political career was marked by his unwavering commitment to improving the lives of farmers. He cofounded the National Unionist Party, a political platform that aimed to unite rural communities across religious and caste lines. Through this party, he challenged the existing power structures that favored landlords and moneylenders, advocating for policies that would alleviate the debt burden on farmers and ensure fair prices for their produce. He served as a minister in the Punjab government for many years, using his position to enact legislation that protected the rights of farmers, such as the Punjab Relief of Indebtedness Act and the Punjab Debtors' Protection Act.
