Balwant Moreshwar Purandare, popularly known as Babasaheb Purandare, was a renowned Indian historian, writer, and theatre personality. Born on July 29, 1922, in Saswad, Maharashtra, he dedicated his life to the study and propagation of the history of the Maratha Empire, particularly the life and achievements of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Purandare's passion for Shivaji Maharaj began in his childhood, and he spent decades researching and documenting the Maratha king's life, military strategies, and administrative acumen. He meticulously studied historical documents, visited forts, and interviewed descendants of Shivaji Maharaj's contemporaries to build a comprehensive understanding of the era.
His most celebrated work is the play "Jaanta Raja," a historical drama depicting the life of Shivaji Maharaj. This magnum opus, written and directed by Purandare himself, involved hundreds of actors, elephants, and horses, creating a visually stunning and historically accurate portrayal of the Maratha period. "Jaanta Raja" has been staged across India and abroad, captivating audiences with its grandeur and patriotic fervor. He established the Shivshahir Babasaheb Purandare Pratishthan, an organization dedicated to preserving and promoting Maratha history and culture. Babasaheb Purandare passed away on November 15, 2021, leaving behind a rich legacy of historical scholarship and artistic excellence.
