Anna Chandy - A Lifestory

Anna Chandy was a pioneering figure in the Indian legal system and a champion of women's rights. Born in Travancore, British India, Chandy broke barriers throughout her career, leaving an indelible mark on the judiciary and social landscape. She pursued her law degree and, in 1928, became the first woman to qualify as a barrister in India. Soon after, she began her legal practice, advocating for women's issues and challenging discriminatory practices. Chandy's commitment to public service led her to become the first woman judge in India in 1937, appointed to the munsif court in Travancore. This appointment was a landmark achievement, shattering gender stereotypes and paving the way for other women to enter the legal profession. She continued her judicial career, ascending to the position of District Judge in 1948. 

Her most significant achievement came in 1959 when she was elevated to the Kerala High Court, becoming the first woman High Court judge in India. During her tenure, she presided over numerous cases, demonstrating her legal acumen and unwavering commitment to justice. After retirement in 1967, Chandy remained active in public life. She served on the Law Commission of India and continued to advocate for women's rights and social reform.
