Ajit Varadaraj Pai is an American attorney who served as Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) from 2017 to 2021. Born on January 10, 1973, in Buffalo, New York, to Indian immigrant parents, Pai's background instilled in him a strong work ethic and a commitment to public service. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard University in 1994 and his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Chicago Law School in 1997. Following law school, Pai clerked for Judge Martin LeachCross Feldman of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.

Pai's career path led him through various legal and governmental roles. He worked for the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, served as Deputy General Counsel at the FCC, and held positions at Verizon Communications. His experience in both the public and private sectors provided him with a comprehensive understanding of telecommunications policy. In 2012, Pai was nominated by President Barack Obama to serve as a Commissioner on the FCC, and he was confirmed unanimously by the Senate.

During his time as FCC Commissioner and later as Chairman, Pai advocated for policies aimed at promoting innovation, competition, and investment in broadband infrastructure. He is perhaps best known for leading the effort to repeal the FCC's 2015 net neutrality rules, a decision that sparked considerable controversy and debate. Pai argued that these rules stifled investment and innovation in the broadband industry, while critics contended that their repeal would harm consumers and give internet service providers too much control over online content. After leaving the FCC, Pai joined Providence Equity Partners, a private equity firm. His tenure as FCC Chairman was marked by significant policy changes and intense public scrutiny, solidifying his place as a prominent figure in the landscape of telecommunications regulation.
